Short briefings on the law and the practical work behind licensing recorded calls. Each one answers a single question and lists its sources.

  • Are voiceprints biometric data? BIPA, CUBI and Washington explained

Yes, in at least three states. Illinois BIPA, Texas CUBI and Washington's RCW 19.375 each list voiceprints as biometric identifiers and limit selling or disclosing them. A call recording is not automatically a voiceprint, but voice audio licensed for AI training can be used to make one.

  • How to redact card numbers and personal details from call audio

Transcribe each call with word timestamps, detect card numbers and other personal details in the text, replace the matching audio spans with silence and the words with tokens, scrub file names and metadata, then listen to a random sample from every queue. Do it before anything leaves your systems.

  • One-party vs all-party consent: which applies to selling call recordings?

Both can apply to the same archive. Federal law and most states need one party's consent to record a call; about a dozen states need everyone's. For licensing, assume the stricter rule governed any call with a caller in an all-party state, and leave out every call that did not meet it.

  • What does 'this call may be recorded' actually cover?

It covers recording the call, and usually the purposes the message names, such as quality and staff training. It does not by itself cover licensing the recording to an AI company later. That depends on your privacy notice, your customer terms and state privacy and biometric laws.

Keep recordings, transcripts and sample files to yourself. This form cannot take attachments, and we never hold call audio.

Where is the company based?

We only need the head office. A few buyers limit which countries they license from.
